Table of ContentsThe post-farm-bill cannabinoid craze can still be overwhelming to those learning about CBD, CBDA, or CB-whatever for the first time. Before we roll out our list of the best CBDA oils across the hemp industry, then, we’ve got a couple things to clear up—what even is CBD, or CBDA, for that matter? Once you understand what CBDA does and how it differs from CBD, you can best take advantage of these industry-leading products for your own comfort and well-being. CBDA vs CBDCannabidiol (CBD) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) are both highly abundant cannabinoids—a term denoting a 200-strong group of compounds native to hemp plants. In simplest terms, CBDA is the natural precursor to CBD; the former eventually becomes the latter through natural processes, manufacturing, and/or when it is smoked/vaped. As the “raw form” of CBD, CBDA is created from the interaction of cannabigerol acid (CBGa) and cannabidiolic acid synthase. Then, as the CBDA ages, it naturally “matures” into CBD. FYI, many standard CBD tinctures—even if they don’t advertise CBDA content—contain some CBDA. Functionally, CBDA and CBD overlap considerably, as one might expect, but often differ on potency across the various benefits. For example, CBDA was found in this study by Canadian researchers to be a thousand times more potent than CBD in its interaction with a serotonin receptor that regulates nausea and anxiety. Both CBD and CBDA were shown in this finding to inhibit a pro-inflammatory enzyme called “cyclooxygenase (COX-1/COX-2) enzyme activity,” which in turn provides relief from inflammation. There are many more similarities and differences to explore between these two cannabinoids, but the general consensus is that CBDA is as potent as CBD or more so in some cases of nausea (especially chemo-related nausea), discomfort, and other issues. Now on to our list of the best CBDA oil tinctures (and softgels) on the market. Best Overall: CBDistillery Raw Synergy CBDA + CBD 1:1 TinctureFeaturing a much higher ratio of CBDA to CBD than most competitors, industry leader CBDistillery has thrown down the gauntlet with their Raw Synergy CBDA + CBD 1:1 Tincture. Best OverallCBDistillery CBD + CBDA 1:1 TinctureConcentration1000mg/30ml (33 mg of CBD/CBDA per ml) IngredientsFull Spectrum Hemp Extract (Aerial Parts), Fractionated Coconut Oil (MCT), Natural Terpenes Each bottle of this full-spectrum tincture contains 500mg of CBDA and 500mg of CBD, along with the usual peppering of “minor” or “secondary” cannabinoids like CBG (cannabigerol), CBN (cannabinol), and of course, good old delta-9 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). There are no artificial preservatives, sweeteners, or added sugar of any kind. In fact, the “other ingredients” list only contains two items: fractionated coconut oil and natural terpenes. In addition to the research already invested in making the product, CBDistillery is currently testing this tincture (and several others of theirs) in one of several pathfinder missions, as they’re calling them, using the Releaf App—which participants use to report their experiences with the product—as the data collection arm of the studies. CBDistillery Raw Synergy takes our top spot for CBDA tinctures for the precedent-breaking CBD-to-CBDA ratio, CBDistillery’s reputation, and the above-average research investment. Best CBD/CBDA Softgel: PlusCBD Extra Strength SoftgelsBest CBD/CBDA SoftgelPlusCBD Extra Strength SoftgelsConcentrations
IngredientsHemp Extract (Aerial Plant Parts), Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Vegan Softgel (Modified Corn Starch, Glycerin, Carrageenan, Sorbitol, % Purified Water) Each PlusCBD Extra Strength Softgel Capsule (made with full-spectrum hemp extract) contains 5 milligrams of CBD/CBDA, along with a selection of minor cannabinoids like cannabigerol, cannabinol, and so on to promote the entourage effect. And though we’ve got nothing against medium-chain triglyceride oil, the use of extra-virgin olive oil as a carrier in this particular formulation is welcomed for all the health-affirming phenolic compounds it provides. It also helps that PlusCBD is one of the most innovative, research-focused CBD brands in the business, as we detail in this review. Most Potent CBD/CBDA Tincture: Bluebird Botanicals Complete CBD + CBDA OilMost PotentBluebird Botanicals Complete CBD + CBDA OilConcentrations
IngredientsProprietary Blend: Organic fractionated coconut oil (MCT), Full-spectrum hemp extract (raw and decarboxylated) (Cannabis sativa) (aerial parts), Steam-distilled terpenes (from hemp (aerial parts). It isn’t only the CBD/CBDA content we’re referencing when gauging the potency of Bluebird Botanicals Complete CBD + CBDA Oil, but rather, the whole package. Here’s how this full-spectrum hemp extract stands out from the other guys:
It doesn’t get much cleaner than steam in the distillation department, and thanks to the THC and terpene boost, this tincture has a stronger argument for overall potency than many others on the market, CBDA or otherwise. Each half-milliliter serving contains 10mg of CBD/CBDA, totaling 600mg per bottle. Especially if you’re new to CBD products, we recommend starting out with a slightly smaller dose in the case of Bluebird Botanicals Complete CBD + CBDA Oil, given how broad the cannabinoid/terpene profile is. CBDA Oil FAQsIs CBDA more effective than CBD?It depends on the application and other contextual factors. In terms of general bioavailability, however, CBDA oil products seem to take a more definitive victory, outdoing the absorption potential of CBD by a significant margin in this Cornell University study and other contemporary findings. What is CBDA oil good for?Due to the lack of FDA regulation for CBDA and most other hemp products (the drugs Epidiolex and Sativex are two notable exceptions), we have to rely on anecdotal accounts and independent research for this answer, which has blurred the lines of CBDA’s benefits a bit. In general, the most confidently demonstrated benefits of CBDA overlap greatly with those of CBD, including relief from various forms of discomfort and stress. How much CBDA oil should I take? This is another issue muddied by a lack of formal regulation and the fact that CBD, CBDA, and other hemp-borne cannabinoids are administered in high and/or widely varying doses in studies (from as low as 20mg or so to more than 500mg a day). These make for very vague dosage parameters, but starting small and working up based on results is a tried-and-true method that keeps safety at the forefront. You can consult this CBD Dosage Chart to learn more. How does CBDA make you feel? While it’s true that CBDA (along with CBD) is a non-psychotropic compound, meaning it won’t produce a THC-like high or sense of euphoria, this doesn’t mean it can’t elicit more subtle changes in mood, cognition, and other high-level brain functions. Depending on the potency of the CBDA, the presence of THC and/or other cannabinoids, and other factors (weight, medical history, concurrent medications, etc.), CBDA may make you feel calm, focused, and positive. It may also decrease physical discomfort to a mild or moderate extent. How long does CBDA stay in your system? As much as we would like to avoid another “it depends” answer, well, it depends. The kind of test you’re being administered (hair, saliva, blood, urine, etc.) has a drastic impact on how long the CBDA will be detectable (hair is by far the longest of these four). Even with a specific kind of test in mind, however, it’s still difficult to answer this question, as your frequency of use, the form of CBDA you used (sublingual oil drops, softgels, gummies, vape, etc.), and other factors can affect how long CBDA is detectable in your system. To provide a very broad range, CBDA may be detectable in your system for as long as 90 days after your previous use (hair test, heavy CBDA use) or as short as just a couple days (saliva test, infrequent use). Though it refers to delta-8 THC as the detectable cannabinoid, this article provides more information on this issue of cannabinoid testing. Does CBDA help with sleep? In the research world, CBDA studies are still largely overshadowed by CBD studies, but there are several promising findings like this study from a neuroscience group in Yucatan, Mexico that show “prolonged wakefulness” as a result of CBDA administration in mice. This isn’t to say that CBDA will keep you up unnaturally late, but conversely, that it regulates the sleep-wake cycle so that you can fall asleep and wake up at more consistent intervals. What are the side effects of CBDA?Once again, the safety profile of CBDA takes a back seat to CBD in the research world, so combining the two produces a more complete understanding of the adverse effects, which, according to this Thomas Jefferson University study, include organ weight elevation (rats), interference in sperm maturation (rats), tremors (rhesus monkeys), central nervous system inhibition (rhesus monkeys), and other effects listed in the data. In humans, CBD has reportedly caused drowsiness, lightheadedness, dry mouth, diarrhea, and rarely, liver damage. Key TakeawaysCBDA is the chemical precursor to CBD. It is generally absorbed more effectively than CBD, and has many of the same benefits as CBD, but with some exceptions. As with any hemp/cannabinoid product, the best CBDA oils and softgels use cleanly extracted, third-party-tested, and preservative-free hemp/ingredients. Most CBDA tinctures—like CBDistillery Raw Synergy—contain a ratio of CBDA-to-CBD. Always monitor your dosage carefully, and adjust according to the results, consulting a healthcare professional if you have any issues or questions. via The CBD Insider https://thecbdinsider.com/review/best-cbda-oil/#utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=best-cbda-oil

TESTSTSARDSARNew Research: Correlation With Cannabis Use and Lower Blood Pressure by Frank Schuler A French researcher has concluded that both current and lifetime cannabis use are associated with lower blood pressure levels after assessing the relationship between cannabis use and blood pressure among a population-based cohort of over 91,000 subjects. The research findings were recently published in the journal Nature: Scientific Reports. The investigator reported: “In adjusted covariates models, lifetime heavy cannabis use was associated with decrease in both SBP [systolic blood pressure], DBP [diastolic blood pressure], and PP [pulse pressure] in both genders, but with a higher effect among women … Current cannabis use was associated with lower SBP levels in men and in women. Same results were observed for DBP and PP.” He concluded, “Longitudinal studies are needed in general populations and then in hypertensive patients to highlight the potential lowered BP effect of cannabis in a medical use.” A 2021 Israeli study of elderly hypertension subjects determined, “Cannabis treatment for three months was associated with a reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as heart rate.” A U.S. study published last year in The American Journal of Medicine reported, “Current cannabis use was associated with lower resting heart rate” in middle-aged subjects. The administration of oral CBD extracts has also been associated with reduced blood pressure levels in healthy volunteers. Numerous other studies have also demonstrated the ability of cannabinoids to influence blood pressure and other cardiovascular responses, though many of these effects are short-term in duration and subjects typically become tolerant to some of them (e.g., tachycardia). According to a literature review published in the journal Neuropharmacology: “The endocannabinergic system plays an important cardiovascular regulatory role not only in pathophysiological conditions associated with excessive hypotension but also in hypertension. Thus, the pharmacological manipulation of this system may offer novel therapeutic approaches in a variety of cardiovascular disorders.” This article first appeared on Internationalcbc.com and is syndicated here with special permission. The Washington Senate approved a bill Wednesday, Feb. 22, prohibiting employers from refusing to hire someone based on cannabis use outside of work. The bill (ESSB 5123) would bar employers from “discriminating against a person in hiring if the discrimination is based upon the person’s use of cannabis off the job and away from the workplace.” Further, employers cannot refuse to hire an applicant if cannabinoids are identified in hair, blood, urine, or other bodily fluids. Employers can still test for the presence of controlled substances, including cannabis, while the employee is working. Employers maintain the right to enforce a drug and alcohol free workplace. Federal employers are exempt from the bill, as are positions requiring high-level security clearance. It does not apply to the airline or aerospace industries. It also does not apply to positions that are safety-oriented for which on-the-job impairment presents a risk of death. Even in legalized states, many employers require job applicants to test negative for the presence of cannabis before they can be considered for a job. Current tests for cannabis do not indicate when the substance was consumed and are therefore a poor measure of impairment. The staff summary of public testimony on the original bill noted, “Cannabis metabolites are in the body for weeks, which is different from alcohol and other drugs. The status quo currently discriminates against medical cannabis patients.” Burl Bryson, executive director of The Cannabis Alliance, spoke with legislators in January, stating job candidates could use cannabis during non-work hours and still test positive weeks later. “If the same approach were applied to alcohol, employers would refuse employment to anyone who enjoyed a beer or a glass of wine on the weekend.” Bryson added, “We all know that this is not a workable standard.” The bill does not protect employees from drug screenings for cannabis while they are employed. Employers would still be permitted to fire employees who test positive for cannabis use after a workplace accident. Nevada and California passed similar measures to protect job applicants in 2019 and 2022, respectively. Though Washington legalized adult-use cannabis in 2012, Initiative 502 did not contain language to protect job seekers from discrimination. Senate Bill 5123 is now being considered by the Washington House of Representatives. A link to your site, with your site's name and description as anchor text. The increased demand for efficient cannabis processing methods made way for new technologies, offering high-quality solutions to commercial-scale facilities. Manual trimming has become increasingly challenging, lending itself to inconsistent product quality, and labor-intensive and time-consuming practices. Processing multiple harvests each year, commercial cannabis growers need machines and Compared to hand trimming, the Mobius Trimmer greatly reduces staffing requirements and saves capital on labor and operating costs. Processing facilities can reduce staff by up to 95% for a cost savings of 91%, depending on the weekly or annual production rates. Machine trimming is faster and more efficient than hand trimming. Cannabis goes from harvest Utilizing trimming technology, cultivators can process more flower faster, allowing for increased productivity and keeping up with the rising demand for cannabis products. Another benefit of machine trimming is the consistency of quality that comes out of the trimmer. Manual trimming often results in those inconsistencies due to human error while a cannabis trimmer will ensure that every bud is trimmed to the proper level and meets the desired quality standards. A machine trimmer also allows for reduced labor costs and improved worker safety. Hand Machine trimming eliminates those risks since the process becomes automated. Many patients use medical marijuana to help them manage various conditions, such as chronic pain, cancer, anxiety, epilepsy, and arthritis. Thanks to innovations in cannabis technology and research, marijuana will only become more widely and effectively used by patients of all kinds. Let’s look at noteworthy innovations in cannabis and how they can help patients make the most of cannabis as a medicine. Cultivation MethodsMuch of why marijuana is so effective as a medicine is due to how it’s produced. The better the growing method is, the more potent the product will be. And that means a more impactful experience for the patient. While most growers are still using outdoor farming and soil-centered systems to grow their marijuana, others are using indoor hydroponic and aeroponic growing systems. The former relies on a nutrient-rich water solution rather than a nutrient-rich soil to grow. The latter involves suspending marijuana plants in the air by their roots and spraying them with a nutrient-rich mist to facilitate growth. These systems are much more environmentally friendly, and help grow marijuana faster, in bigger yields, with fewer pests and diseases. Delivery and ConsistencyTwo significant issues regarding medical marijuana are ensuring quality consistency and getting it to patients. Helping consistency is a brand’s ability to get certified. Products can be certified by reputable agencies like The Cannabis Safety and Quality Standards, putting a stamp of approval on the safety and quality of their marijuana products. Regarding delivery, the opening of thousands of dispensaries across the country has helped make medical marijuana more accessible to many. But what about those that can’t physically visit a dispensary? Thankfully, delivery services, while still in their infancy, are emerging. You can’t deliver marijuana legally in most states. But others, such as Arizona, Arkansas, California, and Colorado, allow it if you have a specific delivery or retail license. Delivery services accommodate those patients that can’t pick up their cannabis on their own, whether because of mobility issues, debilitating symptoms, or another reason. More Product OptionsMost people picture someone rolling a blunt, or joint, or loading a bowl with flower when it comes to marijuana consumption. However, patients can take advantage of many more product options than flower these days. Better ediblesEdibles have long been around in the cannabis world. But we’re way past the days of people only making them in their kitchens. And doing so in a way where ingredients aren’t consistent, and there’s no science to it. There are better edibles today because brands have mastered ingredients, dosage, and cooking techniques. In addition, there are low to high-level THC edibles. And they come in different kinds, like gummies, chocolates, baked goods, mints, and beverages. The rise of extractsCulta defines extracts, stating: “Also known as concentrates, dabs, waxes, and oils, cannabis extracts are a type of refined product where the cannabis essential oils and active compounds are separated from the raw plant material.” The strong, long-lasting effects of extracts make them popular among recreational marijuana users and medical marijuana patients alike. You can add extracts to a joint or blunt. You can dab or vape with them. You can also add them to topicals, edibles, and capsules. What about CBD?Many patients would prefer to get the therapeutic agents of cannabis without the high. That’s where Cannabidiol (CBD) comes in. It’s a compound found in marijuana but doesn’t contain THC, the high-inducing substance. Still, it can be hugely beneficial for pain relief, falling and staying asleep, reducing inflammation, offsetting anxiety, lowering PTSD symptoms, and managing seizures. Patients can add CBD gummies, tinctures, creams, lotions, capsules, drinks, and other products to their health regimes. Thoroughly Understanding Cannabis Innovations is the KeyYes, the above innovations are etching a permanent place in the cannabis industry. But facilitating more widespread use of cannabis in medicine and patient care relies heavily on medical professionals. Many healthcare professionals aren’t familiar with marijuana in medicine, let alone comfortable prescribing cannabis as a treatment option. This is mainly because of the lack of the subject in medical school. Include extensive medical marijuana education in medical school, and medical professionals will be able to share accurate knowledge about marijuana use with patients. They’ll be able to confidently offer cannabis as a treatment option and give patients the alternative remedies they’re asking for. Ultimately, the innovations in cannabis are only part of advancing its use in medicine and patient care. Medical professionals’ knowledge and confidence in prescribing it is the other. However, the latest scientific research and pharmacokinetic testing data have demonstrated that high-quality nanoemulsions may be the key to providing consumers with faster, more efficacious, and consistent uptake of key ingredients, particularly hard-to-absorb, fat-soluble cannabinoids. The pharmaceutical industry knows quite well that key ingredients and medications are a waste if the body can’t absorb them. Likewise, manufacturers of cannabis or THC products should seriously consider why they are taking the time, effort, and money to make a great edible or drinkable product if the key ingredient is in a format that the body cannot readily absorb. High-quality nanoemulsions can solve that problem and give consumers a consistent experience. They also allow for better dose control, which decreases the variability in effect and onset/offset times. In a market where it is difficult to differentiate one brand from another, the superior performance and uptake offered by a high-quality nanoemulsion allow manufacturers to stand out. Additionally, the use of nanoemulsions can equate to less money spent on pricey ingredients due to improved bioavailability and potency. The “Science of Small” — What is a Nanoemulsion?Cannabis is a highly variable, natural product that requires refining. When manufacturers attempt to incorporate it into food or beverage products, which require specific controls, the challenges can be numerous. The bioavailability and onset of nanoemulsions are much better, in large part because it simply takes longer for the body to break down and absorb bigger fat droplets. Only when the droplets are sufficiently tiny can they be metabolized and absorbed properly. A 20-nanometer droplet vs. a 120-nanometer droplet means presenting the body with something that is much more digestible. There are three main benefits of using nanoemulsions. The first is stability. High-quality nanoemulsions provide a very robust and stable environment for cannabinoid oil droplets, making it highly unlikely that the cannabinoid will find something else in the food matrix that it’s happier attaching to. The second is dispersibility. Stable emulsions are more readily dispersible into a food matrix and offer a very high level of consistency. For example, if a manufacturing facility has a beverage tank and the manufacturer needs to ensure that the active ingredients get completely dispersed throughout the tank, a high-quality nanoemulsion can be uniformly and readily dispersed from top to bottom and side to side. The third is physical stability. As long as the manufacturer does a great job of producing a robust system that will survive the processing (e.g. cooking, pasteurization) the nanoemulsion droplets will be so stable in their macro-environment and their micro-environment that when they’re dispersed into a food matrix, they will stay in that conformation. High-quality nanoemulsions can greatly improve consistency and bioavailability compared to traditional formats, but how can a manufacturer know if they’ve found a high-quality nanoemulsion? How to Recognize a High-Quality NanoemulsionA simple and cost-effective way to recognize a high-quality nanoemulsion is to visually assess clarity, color, and consistency. Well-made nanoemulsions should be clear or nearly clear. The reason for this is that the bigger the lipid particles are, the more the visible light is scattered, resulting in a more opaque or milky appearance. This is the same phenomenon that causes milk to be opaque. Milk contains large fat droplets, meaning that when light hits it, it scatters in all colors and all directions, and the milk appears white. A high-quality nanoemulsion with very small particles — about 20 nanometers — will be clear on a visual inspection because it will not be scattering visible light; rather, it scatters ultraviolet light. In this way, a visual inspection can offer a low-tech, easy method of identifying if a nanoemulsion is high-quality. As the mean diameter of the particle size goes down and gets smaller, clarity and stability will go up. The second way to test the quality of a nanoemulsion is to put it in a centrifuge and spin it, subjecting the liquid to very high gravity. Large droplets have a density difference due to the liquid surrounding them and, as a result, tend to separate. Correspondingly, a darker layer may appear on the top or bottom of the emulsion, depending on the density. A high-quality nanoemulsion will demonstrate no change after being spun in a centrifuge. The third method of testing the quality of a nanoemulsion is via laser scattering particle size analysis. This type of scientific analysis involves shining a light into the sample and requires a lab. A high-end analytical tool like laser scattering lab testing will provide much more information by probing the sample with light to determine what kind of environment the droplets are in and, more specifically, their size. Once the nanoemulsions dissolve into a food matrix (be it a gummy, lozenge, or confection), it’s possible to use light scattering particle analysis to confirm the nanoemulsions were 20 nanometers when they went in and remained 20 nanometers in the finished product. We’ve established that nanoemulsions can make very stable, consistent products, but what about measuring their performance? How to Measure Nanoemulsion PerformancePutting cannabinoids and terpenes into edibles is a tricky business. The best way to measure performance is through human uptake studies, in which people consume the product and have their blood drawn over time. The blood is then put into a quadrupole mass spectrometer to measure the nanograms or nanomolar concentration of cannabinoids in their blood. It’s a very objective method of determining whether or not a product is doing what it claims to do. Another performance measurement option is Caco-2 GI permeability assays, wherein a layer of cells separates two liquids, and the test measures how fast the materials migrate from one liquid to the other. They are great, but they’re also relative because they can only indicate that product X is better than product Y and can’t specifically show how long the update takes and what happens after. So, the preferred testing method is to use a blood draw. Overall, pharmacokinetic testing data has demonstrated that high-quality nanoemulsions offer excellent uptake, faster effects, and more efficient bioavailability, all of which can provide manufacturers with a real advantage and a strong point of differentiation in a competitive marketplace. Each of those factors also helps ensure products will deliver a more rewarding and consistent consumer experience, in turn encouraging repeat purchases. Cannabis product manufacturers should not underestimate the value of providing consumers with a consistent product experience where the consumer can trust the expected outcome and have the desired result, time after time. Do you picture Times Square and all the bustle of New York City? While it’s tempting to imagine the Statue of Liberty beckoning travelers to the skyscrapers of Manhattan, much of New York is rural. The Empire State is home to 33,000 family farms and nearly 7 million acres of farmland. It ranks top ten in the production of more than 30 staple commodities, ranging from apples to onions to dairy products. Its temperate climate is also perfect for hemp production. The state’s Domestic Hemp Production Program has already approved over 30,000 acres for hemp farming. While the potential for hemp is exciting, the sexier side of legalization is in the retail adult-use market. In September of 2021, New York legalized recreational cannabis, opening the doors to an estimated $4.2 billion industry. It has the potential to become one of the nation’s largest cannabis markets. State lawmakers have taken a progressive approach to legalization, allowing consumers more liberties than other legalized states. Adults over the age of 21 are allowed to possess up to three ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrates. They can store up to five pounds in their homes and can grow their own supply with up to 12 plants per household. Most innovative is their policy around public consumption. In New York State, if the area permits tobacco consumption, you can smoke cannabis there. This is contrary to many other legalized states where public consumption is not permitted — which creates a conundrum for cannabis tourists. In all, the state’s legal marketplace is shaping up to be one of the more robust and welcoming cannabis industries in the nation. In this Tech Zone, we’ll take a look at some of the companies and innovators taking part in the Empire State’s newest economic opportunity. New York is a Perfect Fit for Female Business OwnersDid you know companies led by women tend to be more profitable than those operated by men? They also produce more than twice the revenue per dollar invested according to research from the Arcview Group and the National Cannabis Industry Association. If women are so masterful at running a business, why did MJBizDaily report that in 2021 only 22% of executive-level positions in cannabis were held by women? That number has actually decreased since 2019. This disturbing trend underlines the importance of supporting women-owned businesses, especially in developing markets like New York. Organizations like Women Grow are vital to creating more gender parity in the cannabis sector. They can offer advice, connections, and support to help women entrepreneurs launch their businesses. It’s an industry that may seem daunting for new entrants. Tanya Osborne, director of community engagement and digital production for Women Grow said the most frequent question she hears from women is how to enter the space. “My answer usually is don’t reinvent the wheel; push the one you have, just in this cannabis lane,” Osborne said. The next hurdle is funding. Osborne noted women receive a fraction of the funding showered on their male counterparts, “and it’s even less for Black and Brown women-led companies.” That’s why Women Grow showcased more than 200 women-owned businesses on its platform in 2021. It’s also why the organization hosted the Women in Cannabis Lobby Day in 2020 and 2021 to push legalization in New York State. “We are determined to keep opening the doors wider to help create an industry that will be filled with diverse women businesses and leaders,” Women Grow President Gia Morón said. As more states embrace legalization, women-led initiatives are helping ease the transition from an illicit to a regulated market. Melissa Moore, director of civil systems reform for the Drug Policy Alliance said Women Grow has been key to helping people learn about the cannabis industry. “Especially in New York, we’ve seen how attending sessions hosted by Women Grow has broadened people’s understanding of the space and how they might fit in,” Moore said. The United Nations Development Council determined increasing female employment rates in the top 37 high-income countries to match the female employment rates in Sweden would boost gross domestic product by $6 trillion a year. It’s numbers like these that should encourage everyone to partner with women-owned companies (WOCs). Cannaclusive Director of Community and Strategy Kassia Graham has seen the power of such partnerships first hand. “Through partnering with Women Grow, Cannaclusive has been able to aid in putting small, new, WOC-owned brands in the spotlight,” said Graham. “Women Grow is helping the industry evolve by putting driven, innovative, women-owned and -operated businesses at the forefront of cannabis.” For all New Yorkers watching the cannabis industry unfold, it’s essential to actively take part in women’s empowerment in the sector. Buy from WOCs, invest in their ideas, and encourage them to take part in this lucrative sector. It may not be an easy path, but it’s one worth pursuing. “Rejection will not deter us, it inspires us,” Morón said. Navigating the Complex World of Cannabis FinanceAs of March of 2021, people 21 years of age and older can legally purchase cannabis in the state of New York. But legal doesn’t mean easy. There are complex regulations in place at every stage of the cannabis lifecycle, from grower to consumer. Finding experienced advisors can make the difference between thriving in a competitive marketplace like New York, or floundering under a sea of regulatory red tape. New York-based Grassi Advisors and Accountants boasts more than four decades of business growth and industry expansion. The firm helps businesses operate efficiently and profitably, minimize tax liabilities, ease the financial audit process, and reduce risk. Navigating ComplexitiesThe cannabis industry is far from conventional. Growers, operators, and retailers need more than traditional tax and accounting advice to achieve long-term success. Grassi’s cannabis advisors provide the guidance and resources that cannabis, industrial hemp, and CBD businesses require to maximize tax savings, secure funding, manage cash flow, implement technology, and navigate other complicated decisions. Grassi has deep roots in New York’s cannabis industry, having advised growers, manufacturers, distributors, and dispensaries since medical marijuana was first legalized in the state. “There are many complexities in this industry,” said John Pellitteri, cannabis practice leader at Grassi. “This market is federally illegal, highly regulated, and there is not a lot of traditional banking available. It can be a minefield, which makes it important for owners to surround themselves with advisors who know the space, have been through it, and can help them anticipate problems before they arise,” said Pellitteri. Securing Solid Financial Strategies Even as more and more states legalize the production and sale of cannabis products, funding continues to be an obstacle. Most financial institutions, such as banks and major credit card companies, will not do business with the cannabis industry. Pellitteri knows of only a handful of banks and non-traditional lenders who offer loans to growers, operators, and retailers. A key challenge is that different states have different laws applying to the legality, use, distribution, and growth of cannabis. It is a continually evolving landscape. “Currently, two main areas keep us very busy,” said Pellitteri. “Those are tax structure and financial compliance. With so many mergers and acquisitions and other changes going on in the industry, it’s important that all financials are in clear order and can help owners make confident decisions.” A History of SuccessGrassi was founded in 1980 by Louis C. Grassi and has since become one of the nation’s largest accounting firms with more than 420 employees and nine locations in the U.S. and Italy. Its team members focus on individual industries to ensure specialized knowledge. The firm’s client list includes one of the first medicinal license holders in New York. Grassi leverages this experience to guide new applicants through the strict requirements of the state’s recreational license application process. “We were one of the first accounting firms to enter the cannabis space,” said Pellitteri. “We’ve spent six years watching it evolve, speaking on it, and writing on it. It’s the majority of my time, and I love what I do. We’re in the industry in a real way and have a lot of talented people advising growers and operators.” Blending Ingenuity and Creativity in NY’s Retail ScenePre-pandemic, New York City’s retail sector contributed $55 billion in taxable sales to the city’s economy according to the State Comptroller. As retail rebounds from the effects of COVID-19, cannabis retailers will play an important part in those taxable sales. One company excited to offer its brand to New Yorkers this year is Genius Pipe. Genius Pipe hit the market in 2017 and quickly moved to the forefront as a preferred smoking modality. Created by experts in the field of fluid dynamics, Genius pipes use golf ball dimple technology to cool the smoke. To put it simply, technology and ingenuity combined to develop a sleek, efficient, and healthier product for modern cannabis users. All About the Consumer“The driving force behind our brand is that we make everything about the consumer experience,” said Dyan Ferman, CEO of Genius Pipe. “Our specific technology cools and filters the smoke, which prevents the coughing and burning sensation that happens with more traditional modalities.” Genius pipes have journeyed from Beta 1.0 to the current Beta 5.0. The latest model contains a QR barcode linked to a social page on the Genius invite-only network, where Genius users can communicate. With the upcoming Beta 6.0 model, designers and individual consumers will be able to add more colorful finishes and custom designs to the pipe’s surface. The NYC Genius store will allow customers to interact with many types of Genius pipes and accessory products. Guests can also select designs and artwork for their pipes. Continued SatisfactionThe Genius brand offers influencer marketing, sales, and a beta-testing membership club that offers discounts and an opportunity to try early-release items, all of which are powered by Genius-specific digital currency called Genius Karma. “Once someone uses our products, they don’t veer,” said Ferman. “Their pipe and other Genius accessories become an extension of who they are.” The Genius PlatformFerman said Genius products are designed to mesh with a modern lifestyle. The pipes are discreet and small enough to fit into a handbag or pocket, making them easy to carry while traveling (especially if using a Genius smell-proof bag). Plus, the magnetic cover slides quickly in place to protect the smoking material from the wind. Genius also offers numerous accessory items, such as lighters, backpacks, dab attachments, screens, vessels, odor sprays, and Genius Consumables such as flower and concentrates. Genius University educates consumers on the cannabis space and the use of Genius products. Whether a person needs to smoke for medical or recreational reasons, Genius has created content to help customers get the most from their products. The brand has been working with the New York art community on their latest designs, which include work by the New York-based comedy podcast Legion of Skanks and the web series, Legalize Coffee. “There is nothing that compares to our products on today’s market,” said Ferman. “We are not merely a device. Genius is a way of life.” Industrial Innovations Are Taking Pre-Rolls to a Higher LevelA perfect joint has a few key qualities. It burns evenly, hits smoothly, and doesn’t droop when held horizontally. While these might sound like basic properties, pre-rolls are a delicate science. One needs quality rolling paper, flower that’s not too dry or too damp, and a particle size that provides structural support and adequate airflow. If New York’s cannabis market follows the same trends as the rest of the U.S., pre-rolls will be a hot seller. The pre-roll category netted $2.6 billion in retail sales in 2021 across six adult-use markets, data-analytics firm Headset reported. It’s now the third highest-revenue category in America, even surpassing edibles in popularity. Manufacturers in the Empire State are part of what Headset estimates will be a $1.1 billion-a-year industry. Business owners should be prepared to ramp up production of pre-rolls to keep pace with enthusiastic buyers. Perfecting Scalable ProductionParticle size is especially important when scaling pre-roll production. Research conducted by President and CSO of Delic Labs Dr. Markus Roggen, and Nursery Manager for 710 Labs Blake Grauerholz, shines some light on the topic. They found cannabis ground by hand offers an ideal smoking experience. Its variable particle size is the key. It is possible to replicate the hand-milled experience on a larger scale by blending two different particle sizes from an industrial grinder, like the Fritsch Pulverisette 19 (P-19). The P-19 can grind flower with precision at several intervals of density, ranging from .5 mm up to 10 mm. Let’s take a look at why particle size matters. Too FineWhen cannabis is ground too finely, the particles are mashed against each other, restricting airflow. When a pre-roll has less airflow, the vapor heats up while trying to escape the tight web of flower. Vapor that’s too hot creates a harsh hit. Finely-milled flower also means a heavier pre-roll which will bump up the retail price. Too LargeLarge, chunky particles create loose joints. This loose packing density leads to limp joints that don’t burn evenly. Plus, larger particles often contain errant stems, which can puncture the rolling paper and prevent an even draw. Hand-GroundWhen grinding by hand, the particle size tends to be mixed. Small particles and large particles create the perfect blend for a velvety-smooth smoke. The particles interlock, providing structural support and a better airway for the smoke to travel through. Small business owners might get away with hand-rolling for a time, but in a large market like New York, small-scale solutions are limiting. Scalable SolutionsA precision milling system like the Fritsch P-19 offers a range of controlled particle sizes. Grauerholz and Roggen determined a blend of particles at 2 mm and 6 mm offer a remarkably similar experience to hand rolling. The resulting pre-rolls offer a smooth hit with an even draw and consistent burn that doesn’t require relighting. Manufacturers can set filling machines to alternate particle size in one-fourth gram intervals, recreating the hand-roll experience on large scale. Continuous flow milling with targeted cutting doesn’t subject flower to prolonged heat or physical degradation from the grinding process, so the molecular profile is unchanged. The result is potent, consistent, scalable pre-rolls. Quality Meets Sophistication in New YorkFrom Ancient China to Snoop Dogg’s era of hip hop and beyond, the appeal of rolling cannabis has stood the test of time. Despite a growing abundance of pipes, bubblers, bongs, and other devices, many people prefer to smoke the traditional way. After two years of research and planning, Ash, the makers of premium rolling papers, emerged on the scene a year ago to rave reviews. Their goal was to develop high-quality, upscale products. “We set out to create a paper that’s unlike the rest,” said Al Tawil, co-founder of Ash. “Our goal is to create a rolling paper that consumers are proud to use in any setting.” With recreational cannabis now legal in New York, Tawil is confident their premium rolling papers will be an integral player in the state’s evolving cannabis scene. Integrity Through CultivationAfter traveling to Asia and Europe, the Ash team decided France was leading the charge in terms of high-quality rolling papers. “We did a lot of research and traveled far and wide. We found that the French really know what they’re doing in terms of cultivating ingredients for rolling papers,” said Tawil. Ash papers are fragrance-free and flavorless as to not interact with the natural taste and smell of cannabis. They are made with vegan, all-natural, organic, and non-GMO components. “As a luxury brand, we have committed to exceptionally high standards that deliver elevated results,” said Tawil. “For example, we hand-roll all of our cones to maintain the highest quality.” Ash offers two core collections, the Classic Collection and the Organic Collection. The papers in the Classic Collection are made from rice pulp, and the papers in the Organic Collection are made from wood pulp. Keeping It ClassyOne of Ash’s taglines is “Where quality meets sophistication.” It wants its clients to feel classy purchasing and using Ash products. “Ash is leading a movement to change the face of the rolling paper industry,” said Tawil. “It is similar to how dispensaries are working to polish their ambiance and offer an upscale experience.” This upscale experience will surely be part of New York City’s expanding cannabis lounge scene. Cannabis lounges are places where people who use marijuana can enjoy themselves in a private and safe environment. As more cannabis lounges open up in NYC, they’ll make an excellent hub for brands like Ash. “We wanted to create a unique rolling paper with beautiful branding,” said Tawil. “Our product’s quality and upscale packaging provide a chic option for people who enjoy smoking.” Looking AheadAs a young company in the industry, Ash is pleased with the mark they’re making. Their primary goal is to continue retail and distributor partnerships so Ash products can be in many additional stores in the U.S. and abroad, particularly in up-and-coming cannabis marketplaces like New York. “I’m an old-school kind of guy and enjoy the process of rolling a joint,” said Tawil. “I wouldn’t try to persuade people to change their method, but for people who have used the same rolling paper brand for years, I suggest they give Ash a try.” This Tech Zone first appeared in the spring 2022 issue of Cannabis & Tech Today. Adult-use is currently illegal in most areas of Australia, with a notable exception being the Australian Capital Territory where some legal protections for consumers exist. Cannabis commerce, including medical cannabis commerce, is very restrictive in Australia. Most of the country’s medical cannabis industry activity currently revolves around pharmaceutical products and research. Australia ‘s Parliamentary Budget Office recently released a report that presents two options for legalizing adult-use cannabis in Australia. Part of the report also includes projections for possible industry tax revenue. Per Newsfeed:
The report estimates that legalization would generate as much as A$28 billion in the first ten years after a regulated adult-use industry was launched. It’s worth noting that the projected figure is largely based on a snapshot in time. As the global cannabis industry continues to evolve and the landscape shifts, the profit potential for companies and governments will shift with it. That is true in Australia just as it is true everywhere else around the world. It’s unclear at this time what the chances are of either option listed in the government report actually becoming law, but it is encouraging to see that multiple options are being considered, and that the information is from a government entity.
